Tableau Desktop is based on breakthrough technology from Stanford University that lets you drag & drop to analyze data. You can connect to data in a few clicks, then visualize and create interactive dashboards with a few more. We’ve done years of research to build a system that supports people’s natural ability to think visually. Shift fluidly between views, following your natural train of thought. You’re not stuck in wizards or bogged down writing scripts. You just create beautiful, rich data visualizations. It’s so easy to use that any Excel user can learn it. Get more results for less effort. And it’s 10 -100x faster than existing solutions.
Tableau does not provide a ton of buttons to press or switches to flip. In a way, that is a strength: the interface is designed to let you get to only the most relevant information in any data sets you provide. On the other hand, the Mobile version in particular is missing several features that heavy data analysts might consider useful, and while the Desktop version has all of the features that we considered essential to data analysis, this is not a heavyweight program.
As for data handling, Tableau sees no obstacle in any data sets. It can connect to the data on your local or network storage, or even pull vast amounts of data gathered on your favorite cloud platforms and services (such as Salesforce or Google Analytics). The app can merge multiple data sets, manage various insight-discovery algorithms, and optimize data sources without the need to write a single line of code.
Installation and Use
The app weights around half a gigabyte, enabling power users, students and analytics enthusiasts to download and install it on their PC quickly and with ease. Developers recommend that the tool be deployed on PCs running Windows 7 or newer OS, and have at least a single-core processor, 2 GB of RAM memory and have at least 1.5 GB of free storage space. For a comfortable working environment, developers recommend any of the modern PC (desktop or laptop) configurations that can comfortably run Windows 10.  The app is also available on macOS and can be run from inside virtualized environments.
Tableau does not have every possible analytics feature, and it runs slowly on older computers. On the other hand, if Tableau has all of the features you need, and you have enough processing power to run it well, it makes a great option for both data analysis and data storage. While we didn’t have the chance to directly test its cloud functionality, its Desktop, Server and Mobile versions were par excellence.
